Each year, San Francisco Pride electrifies the city with rainbow flags, music, and a sense of unity. This summer, I brought my Canon R5 Mark II and a 28mm lens—in crop mode, effectively 45mm—not to chase the parade’s pageantry, but to find the honest, overlooked stories humming beneath the surface.
These are not the main floats or the staged performances. They are, instead, the quiet connections and joyful in-betweens—moments anyone might miss if they didn’t pause and observe.
Transformation Begins: The Face Painter

Just outside the thrumming swarm of Market Street, a young person sits calmly as a friendly artist sweeps color across their face. It’s a small ritual of courage and pride. Face painting becomes a badge of belonging and gentle affirmation. For me, witnessing this quiet metamorphosis felt just as powerful as the parade’s loudest cheers.

In a world of performance, it’s easy to miss the sincere. This couple melted into an embrace, almost vanishing from the crowd. Public love stands proud at a celebration like this. The intimacy reminds us that Pride is, above all, about acceptance—for each other, one moment at a time.
Between Here and There

Heading to or from the festivities, a colorful group rides the escalator. Costumes and hats, sequins and rainbows—a study in movement and anticipation. This slice of parade life tells a key part of the story: Pride isn’t just on the official route. It lives in the city’s arteries—in stations, sidewalks, and every journey in between.
Pure Joy in the Midst of Celebration

Bubbles float through the air as children laugh and play, surrounded by the vibrant colors and energy of the Pride parade crowd. This scene captures the innocence and happiness that fuel the celebratory spirit—from the youngest participants to the widest smiles.

Why I Look Away From the Parade

San Francisco Pride 2025 was not just spectacle, but a tapestry of small moments that speak volumes about hope, love, and connection.
