Date: November 8, 2025
Location: Lake Elizabeth at Fremont Central Park
Camera / Lens: Canon R5 Mark II + EF 70–200mm with 1.4× extender
Theme: Autumn, Mist, Stillness
Light Notes: Soft post-breakfast haze; diffused morning glow
Mood / Intention: Quiet reflection, seasonal transition, calm observation

Reflection

This photograph was made during a calm post-breakfast walk. The shifting mist was the first thing to catch my eye, veiling the lake in dreamlike stillness. Only later, reviewing the image, did I notice the soft blushes of autumn on the distant shoreline—colors that quietly revealed themselves, whispering their presence beneath the gentle veil.

That small revelation lingered with me: the richness of the scene extended beyond what I had been able to grasp in the moment. The bird, turned gently towards me, became a silent companion in this suspended hush—a gesture that made the frame feel more intimate than any alternate view.

During the Fremont Photographic Society judging, I was reminded that embracing a touch more color could have deepened autumn’s embrace without losing the serenity of that morning. Mood and subtlety can coexist beautifully with a little more tonal generosity. Still, I treasure the restraint in this rendering—it preserves the softness and allows the atmosphere to breathe.

Sometimes, the air itself becomes the subject, with trees, water, and bird weaving their stories quietly around it.

Post-Processing Notes

  • Edited in Adobe Lightroom
  • Minor exposure adjustment (slightly lowered to preserve mood)
  • Lightroom presets used: Scenic Sharp, Direct Positive, and Punch
  • Recently added “Color Pop” to enhance foliage and emphasize autumn warmth
  • Minor crop to balance the foreground with the shoreline

What I Like / What I’d Improve

Like:

  • The quiet mood, spectral mist, and the subtle interplay of color
  • How the bird’s stance offers a gentle connection to the viewer

Improve:

  • Experiment with drawing out more color in the trees while honoring the misty mood
  • Perhaps revisit this place on a colder morning for even denser fog
