Beams of sunlight slice through stormy clouds, lingering over the bridge and power towers—a fleeting moment of stillness and anticipation.

N4C 2025 Annual Competition – 5th Place

Monochrome Digital Advanced

Lightbreak Over the Bay

A quiet winter moment turned into an unexpected honor.

English

Captured at Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge (Fremont, California) with an iPhone 16 Pro Max during a quiet winter walk, Lightbreak Over the Bay was awarded 5th Place in the Monochrome Digital Advanced category at the Northern California Council of Camera Clubs (N4C) 2025 Annual Competition.

I was surprised and honored to learn that this photograph received an award. I did not attend the award luncheon and only later discovered the result in the official newsletter. This made the recognition feel even quieter and more unexpected — arriving without anticipation, much like the light itself in the image.

This image reflects a moment of quiet emergence — light breaking through layers of winter mist over the bay, revealing structure, depth, and atmosphere through tone alone. Made during an ordinary walk after lunch, it serves as a reminder that meaningful photographs often arise not from elaborate preparation, but from presence, attention, and receptivity to fleeting moments.
