Solitude on a Narrow Bridge
I didn’t plan to find a moment like this. The path through the trees was ordinary, shaded, and familiar — the kind of place you walk through without expecting anything except the next turn. But then the creek appeared, and above it, a narrow concrete bridge, weathered and quiet. And on that bridge, a single person sat alone, reading quietly as the forest gathers around him.
The scene felt unhurried. The foliage pressed in from every side, softening the edges of the bridge and muting the sounds of the campus beyond. Water moved gently below, slipping past branches and stones in a rhythm too subtle to notice unless you stopped. He didn’t look up. He didn’t pose. He simply existed in the moment, unaware of how the light caught his white shirt and made him the brightest point in the frame.
I raised the camera and let the scene settle. The textures of the concrete, the tangled branches, the quiet stream — all of it felt balanced in a way I couldn’t have arranged. In color, the red graffiti pulled too much attention, but in black and white, it softened into the background, becoming part of the bridge’s history rather than a distraction. Silver Efex gave the moment a kind of timelessness, stripping away everything except light, shadow, and presence.
Sometimes solitude isn’t dramatic. Sometimes it’s just a person on a narrow bridge, taking a small pause in a world that rarely offers one. And sometimes that’s enough.
