Lucy’s Cousin: Always Listening (Even Without a Lesson Reminder)

Wild hare with large upright ears, standing alert in a grassy field — looks as if listening intently, like Lucy from Duolingo always watching.

I thought I was out here in peaceful nature, photographing a hare with radar-dish ears. A quiet moment. Maybe a deep breath of fresh air.

But then it hit me — those ears aren’t just for foxes. They’re tuned for something far more insidious: language learning guilt.

Because ever since I listened to one of those Duolingo podcasts where Lucy signed off with her breathy “I’m always listening…”, I’ve been a little paranoid. Like, sure, Lucy. Always listening. That’s comforting.

Now every rustle in the bush, every shadow across the field — I half expect to see fat Lucy, in her polka-dot dress, crouched awkwardly among the thorns, notebook in hand. She might wave, might even smile, before asking in perfect Spanish:
“¿Has practicado hoy?”

And the hare? I’m pretty sure he’s in on it. Those gigantic ears? Advanced directional microphones, relaying my failures directly to Lucy’s tracking app.

(By the way, it took about 200 shots to get this hare looking so perfectly paranoid — plus a background with enough distance for creamy bokeh. Totally worth it to catch him mid-conspiracy.)

Bonus: Beware the Antenna

Oh, and have you ever noticed Lucy’s suspicious hair knot? Look closer — there’s a little metal antenna poking out, swiveling like a periscope. That’s how she catches your conversations about ice cream, or soy, or your Netflix settings.

Because apparently it’s not enough to skip your lessons. Now Lucy suspects your pistachio cone might be a coded message for Russian spies.

In fact, half the “lesson” seems to be her interrogating you in conspiratorial whispers:
“Oh… you like ice cream? How strange. Is this some sort of Russian spy code? I’ll get to the bottom of this…”

Meanwhile, you’re just standing there, trying to learn how to order a coffee in German, while Lucy plots your file for Duolingo Counterintelligence.

So go ahead, take your nature walks. Snap your wildlife shots. Just know: somewhere, Lucy is lurking — with her antenna tuned, her notebook ready, her suspicions about your snack choices swirling.

This paranoid moment generously sponsored by Duolingo. Keep your streak alive… or Lucy will find you.
