I arrived a few minutes late.

The most dramatic sunrise colors had already faded — those explosive reds and purples that last only moments. But as I stood by the lake, I realized something quieter was happening instead. The red was still there, thinning and dissolving into blue, reflected softly across the water.

As I raised the camera, birds lifted off from the far side of the lake. Their silhouettes crossed the brightest band of sky, briefly interrupting the reflection below. I wished their wings had extended just a little wider, but even in that imperfection, the moment felt complete — fleeting, unrepeatable.

Handheld with the R5 Mark II and the 24–105mm, I trusted the stillness. The lake did most of the work for me.

Light Notes

The light was transitional — sunrise had passed, but the morning was still settling in. A thin band of warm red-orange lingered near the horizon, contrasted by cool blue clouds above. The lake surface acted as a second sky, softening everything and slowing the scene down.
