Venas de luz hacia la ciudad dormida
Long‑exposure traffic trails flowing across the Bay Bridge toward a hazy, resting San Francisco skyline.

Title: Veins of Light at the Edge of Dawn
Caption / Reflection
I woke at 4am and reached Yerba Buena Island a little after 6. The air was cold but calmer than expected—no dense fog, just a soft layer of haze over the Bay that diffused the bridge lights beautifully.
Fellow photographer Bill arrived shortly after, and together we explored different angles overlooking both spans of the Bay Bridge. The early morning quiet gave the whole place a stillness that made every long exposure feel almost meditative.

Silver Harp Over Still Waters Arpa de plata sobre aguas quietas
The eastern span glows like a silver harp, red and white light trails curving over calm blue water.
When the ambient light grew stronger, I switched to a 10-stop ND filter to stretch the exposures. This smoothed the water into a gentle plane and turned the traffic into long glowing lines—almost like the bridge’s bloodstream pulsing toward the city.
It reminded me how much I enjoy these slow, intentional shoots: just light, silence, and the slow rhythm of the shutter. Afterward, Bill and I warmed up with coffee and talked gear and ideas for future trips.
Light Notes
Soft pre-sunrise blue tones shifting into warm gold. Slight haze enhanced the glow of bridge lights. No harsh sunlight.
What I Like / What I’d Improve
Like:
- Long-exposure trails over the bridge
- Soft haze giving a cinematic mood
- Smooth water from the ND filter
Improve:
- Try a different vantage point next time
- Remember to switch off lens image stabilization when shooting on a tripod, since lens IS can override the in‑camera setting; this can introduce subtle vibration if left on. I did remember it after a few shots.
- Use Bulb mode with a remote trigger or the built‑in Bulb timer (Shoot Menu 6) instead of holding the shutter button for very long exposures.
- Shoot a few vertical pano-stitch frames to gain extra resolution and cropping flexibility.
- Pack fingerless gloves and a warm hat again; they made the long, cold pre‑dawn session much more comfortable.

Mist Between Two Shores Niebla entre dos orillas
A soft veil of haze hangs between bridge and skyline, red trails stretching quietly across the bay.
Post-Processing Notes
- Removed wire lines and distracting branches using iPhone Eraser
- Color grading + dual-tone in ON1 Photo RAW for mood control
- Final cleanup in Lightroom (spot removal, slight sharpening)
